Mary asks…
HOW THE HELL DID I GAIN 5 POUNDS IN ONE DAY?!?
I’m on the Slim-Fast 321 diet plan. and i’ve been on it for about almost 3 weeks and i have lost 8 pounds. I have not been working out at all until today around 1ish to 3-something. p.m and i checked the scale tonight and it says i gained 5 pounds! is this ok? will it go down in the morning?
-i think im about to start my period..but not sure.

Jane answers:
It could be water weight.
It is very normal for weight to fluctuate up to 5 pounds.
It happens. Then it goes back down again. Maybe in the morning. Maybe in a few days. Maybe in a week.
But it does go back down to normal.

Lisa asks…
Why would antibiotics not work?
Okay, wrote this question earlier but it didn’t save, so in a nutshell.
Got uterine infection 3 weeks postpartum, got given Metronidazole 400mg a day for 2 weeks – went away, then 3 days later it came back with avengance. Got more antibiotics same one but stronger dose 1500mg a day, having horrible side effects, now got thrush too in my throat and mouth, don’t know if the antibiotic is actually working or not, still feel the same now 4 days into the course. Had culture done for the bacteria which is apparently a very common type of anaerobe and Metronidazole is the most effective one to kill it, but for some reason it’s not going.
Can the following cause the infection to remain:
Stress and Anxiety, being slightly anemic due to loss of appetite through stress.
I’ve been on 3 lots of antibiotics now – a broad spectrum one when I was waiting for the culture result, then the first lot of Metro, then another swab – infection still there – more/stronger Metro. I’m now 7 weeks postpartum and have a lot of stress going on, I’m getting 5 hours’ sleep a night, my baby is now also sick at the moment so I’m trying to look after her too.
When I gave birth the placenta was in tact so the chances of anything being left in are slim.
Also, if I had a bad uterine infection wouldn’t I be in pain all the time? There is virtually no pain, I do get a muscle pain/pulling sensation in my groin when I first sit up in bed in the morning then it goes. But most of the time I just get stuff coming out of me and a heavyish feeling down there sometimes.

Jane answers:
Your bug may have developed a resistance to the antibiotic. You should enquire whether they cultured to identify the bug or whether they also did a sensitivity test to make sure the antibiotic killed off the bacteria.
The thrush can be due to losing ‘good’ bacteria due to the antibiotics, when you have finished the antibiotics you could try eating live yogurt, drinking probiotic drinks or taking acidophilus capsules which may help to repopulate your gut with the ‘good’ bacteria.
Stress and anxiety can lower your immune response but if the bacteria are sufficiently sensitive then this shouldn’t matter too much.
The other possibility is that, if you are swallowing your antibiotic, then either you are not absorbing it in the usual amounts or that your body is breaking it down too quickly. The former can be overcome by using an injectable form, the latter only by changing the antibiotic.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

Sharon asks…
Is seriously confused……….?
Here it goes…..
I am really confused which day you go for the LMP. I was on yaz for 6 months. November 1-5 was my period. Then Mid November I got off the Yaz, and had abnormal spotting… not a normal flow,December 4-6. Then 3 day spotting December 19, 20,21st. THEN 2 wipes of blood January 4th. Then nothing since. The u/s on 1/29/2010 the u/s put me at 8 weeks along then. They gave me a due date of 9/21/2010, then with December 4th period they gave me a due date of 9/10/2010.
I had my 20 week u/s and the baby was showing 4 days sooner then that.
Then had a scan done at 26 weeks and it showed the baby was 3.5lbs, and my belly is measuring way ahead. Does not look like gestational diabetes. I am all baby.
I am really thinking November period is the one to go by, which would put me at 32 weeks along. I have been in the hospital with preterm labor contractions, I have been having snot like discharge that I believe is my mucus plug, I am 1/2 cm dialated. I have been nesting, and have a lot of energy. I really do think I am further along then than said with the u/s. It’s Womans/mothers intuition. I do not have any infections of any sort, I have seen this discharge for 4 days now. And it comes out in clumps. I have been in L&D so many times I cant count. They told me in the hospital that the chances in the next 2 weeks is slim that I will have him, but in the next month they think so. He is head down.
What do you think?

Jane answers:
It all depends on how the baby is measuring in an ultrasound. An ultrasound is much more accurate than basing a due date on your period. An ultrasound can usually give a baby’s age to within 10 days. If the ultrasound says you’re 26 weeks than you really are 26 weeks give or take a week and a half.
